Candal House
Year 1989 | Slidell, Louisiana
This expansive 8,800-square-foot residence is set on a five-acre densely wooded site located within a semi-historic area, notable for its proximity to colonial-era plantations. The influence of the Villa Palladiana is evident in the arrangement of the house as an object within the landscape. A strong central axis connects the pond, entry portico, living space, porch, and swimming pool.
The floor plan reinforces this orientation through the front and rear walls, which allow abundant natural light to permeate the interior. Private and service spaces flank the sides of the house, further emphasizing the central axis.

A distinctive umbrella-shaped roof, supported by tree-like columns, echoes the verticality of the nearby pine forest, creating a harmonious relationship between architecture and nature.
